Which charm to give, moment by moment

Birthdays, new mothers, graduations, anniversaries and bridal parties: which solid gold charm suits each, and how to have it made in time.

A charm makes a good gift because it can mean something specific. For a birthday, choose a birthstone or a personal symbol; for a new mother, a heart or a moon; for a graduation, a star or a lion; for an anniversary, a heart and a key. Every design takes 2 to 4 weeks to make.

A necklace says "I thought of you". A charm on it says what you thought. That is the whole of the idea, and it is why a good charm gift begins with the person rather than the object: what she is going through, what is about to change, what she might never say out loud but would be glad to wear every day.

Before you choose

Choose the symbol, not the object. Think about the moment she is in, then pick the shape that speaks to it. Start small, too: one charm on a fine chain is a complete gift, and she can add more later. Then plan the time. Every design is made to order and takes about 2 to 4 weeks, and custom pieces are final sale, so sizes and lengths are worth settling before you order. You can build the gift in Design your own and send the link to a friend for a second opinion.

A birthday

A birthday suits a personal symbol, a birthstone, or both. The usual modern list gives diamond for April, emerald for May, ruby for July, sapphire for September and opal for October, and our charms answer each of them. For April, our charms are set with diamonds. For May, the Majestic Lion Medallion and the Panther Charm both have emerald eyes. For July, the Third Eye Buddha Charm holds a ruby. September has the Sapphire Protective Eye Charm, set around a blue sapphire, and October has the Mystic Opal Eye Medallion, which pairs opal with a sapphire protective eye.

For someone who reads her horoscope, our guide to celestial and zodiac charms explains how to choose a star or a moon. A big birthday can take a Standard chain with a charm in Large.

A new mother

Choose something that is about her as well as the baby. A heart works well: the Elongated Heart Charm is slim and modern, and the Open Heart Charm is lighter and airier. So does a moon and star, and what the crescent and star mean explains the pairing. A protective eye reads as a quiet wish for safety; our piece on the protective eye explains where it comes from.

A short chain at 16 inches is comfortable to wear with a baby in arms, and a Petite link is light. You can add another charm for each child, so a single gift becomes something the family keeps adding to.

A graduation

A graduation ends one thing and starts another, so the charm should look forward. A star or a compass speaks of direction, and arrows, compasses and North Stars explains the family of symbols. A lion or a panther speaks of courage; see lion and panther charms. A key is for the door that has just opened.

Graduates often prefer a bracelet, because it is easy to wear to work, and necklace or bracelet weighs the two. Count back from the date of the ceremony when you order.

An anniversary

An anniversary gift has the advantage of coming round again. One charm this year, another the next, all on the same chain. A heart and a key are the classic pair, for a single year or for fifty; heart and key charms explains why they belong together. A horseshoe or a clover carries a wish for good fortune ahead, as our guide to luck charms describes. Or choose two charms that belong together, one for each of you. Our earlier piece, the considered gift, has more thoughts on choosing for a milestone.

A bridal party

Wedding gifts usually come several at once, so plan them as a set. The same chain with a different charm for each woman is personal and still reads as a group. The same charm for everyone is simpler, and a good keepsake. If they prefer different golds, choose yellow, rose or white for each; charms follow the color of the chain by default. The bride can wear a charm of her own: a heart, a key or a North Star.
