Is it safe to buy fine jewelry online? A checklist before you pay
Ten checks before you pay, and what happens after delivery.
Buying fine jewelry online is safe when the seller names the metal, shows written terms, ships insured and tracked, has a reachable person, and lets you check its claims. Skip any site that hides these. Ilene Joy ships fully insured within the US, with tracking by email, and a signature may be required on delivery.

Ten checks before you pay
| Check | What good looks like | Ilene Joy |
|---|---|---|
| 1. A secure site | HTTPS, and a real contact page | ilenejoy.com, with a contact page and an atelier email |
| 2. The metal is named | "Solid 14K" or "18K", not "gold tone" | Solid 14K or 18K gold |
| 3. The price is shown | Before checkout, and it explains itself | Live total in the builder. Designs from $1,485 |
| 4. Terms in writing | Returns, exchanges and final-sale rules | Stated on the shipping and returns page |
| 5. Insured shipping | The seller insures the parcel | Complimentary and fully insured in the US |
| 6. Tracking and signature | You know where it is, and who took it | Tracking by email. An adult signature may be required |
| 7. A person to ask | A reply within a day | The atelier typically replies within one business day |
| 8. A way to see it | Photos at scale, or an on-model view | On-model view, and appointments |
| 9. A record you can read | Press and stockists you can open | Press roundup and stockists |
| 10. A repair path | Someone to call if a stone loosens | The aftercare page |
Returns and custom orders, plainly
Read the return terms for the exact piece. Ours work like this.
- Eligible in-stock pieces can be returned within 14 days of delivery for a refund, if they are unworn, unaltered and in original packaging.
- Made-to-order standard collection pieces can be exchanged or returned for store credit in the same window.
- Custom designs are final sale. A custom order can be canceled within 24 hours of being placed.
- Engraved, resized and personalized pieces are also final sale.
All returns are subject to inspection. Check any seller for the same terms before you click. For a custom order, the on-model view and a consultation matter more. See can I see a custom necklace on before I buy.
Shipping rules worth knowing
A seller that states a shipping time must reasonably expect to meet it, and if it cannot, it must offer you the choice to wait or cancel for a refund. That is 16 CFR 435.2. Insured shipping protects the parcel while it travels. A signature protects the handoff. Choose an address where someone can accept delivery.
After it arrives: insurance and appraisal
Shipping insurance ends when you sign. After that, the piece is yours to cover.
- Check your policy. The Insurance Information Institute says a standard homeowners policy generally caps theft of jewelry at about $1,500. See its guidance on jewelry coverage.
- Ask about scheduling. A floater covers individual pieces, including accidental loss. The same source says floaters require a professional appraisal.
- Keep your records. Your receipt, photos and the order number. For repairs, the atelier asks for your name, order number if available, photos and a description.
- Use an independent appraiser if your insurer asks for one. A seller's own value may not satisfy it.
This is general information, not insurance advice. Ask your insurer.
Red flags
- No stated metal, or only "gold tone".
- Prices far below the gold rate.
- No address, no phone, no email that answers.
- Reviews that are all identical in tone. Look for press and stockists you can open.
- No return policy, or one hidden at checkout.
What we do not claim
We do not claim to be the only safe seller. We ask you to apply the same checks to every seller, ours included. Our general checklist is in how to choose a fine jewelry brand in America. To start a design, open Design your own.
Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy fine jewelry online?
Yes, if the seller names the metal, states its terms in writing, ships insured and tracked, and can be reached. Check press and stockists you can open, not just the product page.
What should I check before buying jewelry online?
The metal, the return terms for that exact piece, whether shipping is insured, whether a signature is needed, and who you can contact. Our table above lists ten checks.
Is shipping insured on expensive jewelry?
At Ilene Joy, yes. Domestic orders ship with complimentary, fully insured shipping and tracking by email, and a signature may be required.
Should I get an appraisal for new jewelry?
If you plan to insure it as a scheduled item, your insurer may require a professional appraisal. Ask your insurer first.
How do I insure fine jewelry?
Check your homeowners or renters policy for its jewelry limit. The Insurance Information Institute notes a standard policy generally caps theft at about $1,500. A floater covers individual pieces.
Can I return jewelry I bought online?
It depends on the piece. Eligible in-stock Ilene Joy pieces can be returned within 14 days of delivery. Custom designs are final sale.
