Solid gold jewelry made in the USA: what the label means and what to look for

What the label means for solid gold, and what to look for.

An unqualified Made in USA label on solid gold jewelry is hard to meet, because the US rule requires that all or virtually all parts and processing be American, and gold and stones are often imported. Look for plain wording about where it is designed and made. Ilene Joy is designed and handcrafted in Los Angeles.

What the rule says

The Federal Trade Commission treats "Made in USA" as a promise. Under 16 CFR 323.2, a product can carry an unqualified Made in USA claim only if three things are true:

1. The last assembly or processing step happens in the United States. 2. All significant processing happens in the United States. 3. All or virtually all of its parts are both made and sourced in the United States.

That third condition is the one that trips up fine jewelry. A gold chain with a diamond has metal and a stone with their own origins.

Why this is hard for gold jewelry

JCK's report on the rule, Adorned in the USA, describes how difficult it is for jewelry made of precious metal to qualify. One industry executive called the standard "technically impossible for precious metals products to achieve."

You do not need to settle that argument. You only need to read the wording on the piece you are buying.

How to read a jewelry claim

What you see What it tells you What to ask
"Made in USA" The unqualified standard above Where are the metal and stones from?
"Made in USA with imported materials" Made here, parts from elsewhere Which parts?
"Assembled in the USA" Final assembly is here What was made elsewhere?
"Designed in Los Angeles" Design is here. Says nothing about making Where is it made?
"Handcrafted in Los Angeles" The making happens at a bench in Los Angeles Who is the maker?
No claim at all Nothing is promised Ask, and expect an answer

A qualified claim is not a weaker one. It can be the more honest one.

Where Ilene Joy is made

Our craftsmanship page says Ilene Joy is designed and handcrafted in Los Angeles. Each piece is made by Ilene's master jeweler and a small team of artisans at our bench. Our shipping page adds that every jewel is reviewed before it leaves the atelier.

That is the claim we make, and it is the one we can show. We do not use an unqualified "Made in USA" label. Our craftsmanship page also says our gemstones are sourced from around the world.

We do not publish where the gold in a given piece was refined. If that matters to you, write to atelier@ilenejoy.com and ask about the piece you are considering. You should expect a straight answer from any jeweler.

What you can check yourself

Is "made in Los Angeles" the same as "Made in USA"?

Not as a legal matter. A city name says where the work is done. "Made in USA" is an FTC-regulated claim about the whole product. Choose the wording that matches what a brand can show. A bench you can name is often worth more to a buyer than a flag on a tag.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What fine jewelry is made in the USA?

Many designers make jewelry at benches in the US, but few use an unqualified "Made in USA" label on gold pieces. Read the exact wording and ask where the metal and stones come from. Ilene Joy is designed and handcrafted in Los Angeles.

Can gold jewelry be labeled Made in USA?

Only if it meets the FTC standard: last assembly in the US, all significant processing in the US, and all or virtually all parts made and sourced in the US. JCK reports that this is hard for precious metals.

Is jewelry made in Los Angeles actually made there?

Ask for the wording. "Designed in" and "made in" are different claims. We say designed and handcrafted in Los Angeles because the work is done at our bench.

What does handcrafted in mean on jewelry?

That a person made it at a bench. It does not say where the gold came from. A good brand will tell you who the maker is and where the bench is.

What does the FTC require for Made in USA claims?

That the last assembly or processing is in the US, that all significant processing is in the US, and that all or virtually all parts are made and sourced in the US.

Can I visit the bench where my jewelry is made?

Our Los Angeles atelier is by appointment only. Private appointments with Ilene are available. Write to atelier@ilenejoy.com to arrange one.
